This slow cooker salisbury steak recipe is an easy way to make this Old Fashioned comfort food. Just brown the meat to prep and submerge into the thick gravy to cook all day until fork tender. If you’re looking for a more new Crockpot recipes this one is sure to be a hit.

I do have several small kitchen appliances but somehow all things come back to good ol’ slow cooker recipes, especially during the Winter snowy days. Since making this I have tweaked it a few different ways as well.

If you tried our Instant Pot Salisbury Steak and were blown away, but want to make it in the morning instead this is a great option. Maybe you saw that but don’t have that machine, BUT slow cooking is your thing, I get it y’all.

Crockpot Salisbury Steak with Cream of Mushroom Soup

Ingredient Notes

We use 80/20 ground beef made into patties, but you could use half spicy ground sausage too if you liked a little heat in there. For a lower fat version use ground turkey or chicken (but not my preference). You can make the same meat mixture but into smaller balls to create Crockpot Meatballs and Gravy as an appetizer too.

To make things easier I will add 1 packet of onion soup mix in with the meat to add a ton of protein real quick.

You will want some olive oil, use the good stuff, or avocado oil works too.

All purpose flour will thicken the gravy but if you need a gluten free alternative you can use arrowroot instead.

A can of cream of mushroom soup, 10.5 oz. size, will help create the sauce or gravy that it will cook in to make them tender but add a ton of flavor to the patties all at the same time.

To thin things out a bit you will add some 2% or whole milk, dairy free variety or beef broth could be used instead if need be.

And then a packet au jus mix gravy mix. It comes dry in a packet and is added for even more flavor for your beef patties to soak up. You could use a dash of worcestershire sauce instead if need be.

with Frozen Hamburger Patties

We do have tips on how to thaw Frozen Ground Beef if that is all you have on hand. I don’t know if this is a great way of How to Cook Frozen Burgers but I imagine if they were separated from one another you could use them.

with Hamburger Patties

It is easy! You can certainly use store bought, already formed Hamburger Steak and pop those in. When I make homemade patties I typically will mix up the meat and onion soup mix as we did below.

Or make meatloaf without breadcrumbs and form into a patty, about 4 per pound. 1.5 pounds would make closer to 6 but typically I won’t add more than that as you want them to sit in one layer ideally when cooking.

with Cream of Mushroom Soup

You could certainly make the condensed soup from scratch using our homemade cream of mushroom soup recipe first but canned from Campbells is used here. Mushroom variety is the most common and tastes the best but any of the condensed flavors will work really.

How to Make the Gravy

This is what you’ll need to make both the meat mixture and the Brown Onion Gravy. You could add slices of diced onion to add to the overall texture but the dry mix will get tender with the milk and soften when warmed. Another thing to add texture would be to include 1 package of sliced mushrooms.

with Cube Steak

You could make Slow Cooker Cube Steak with the ingredients here but with that firmer meat. With the longer cook time this cut won’t get as tender rather, less time is better in this case.

How Long does it Take to Cook Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak?

If you’re not home you can use your timer to have it start on low about noon. In the case you can’t do either and 8 hours is needed that is okay, you just may have broken down patties that fall apart a bit more than you may want.

How to Serve

When I am making a batch of this Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak Recipe and serve it over mashed potatoes or egg noodles topped with brown gravy with chopped fresh parsley. If you wanted a duo of a dish you would have enough gravy here to make slow cooker biscuits and gravy together.
